Kirra Reef Snorkel & Scuba fun + Cooly Rocks On

If you’re keen to escape the crowds, or just want to experience some of Kirra’s abundant natural beauty, Diving the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise offers scuba and diving at Kirra Reef. Thanks to the Gold Coast’s moderate climate, the water remains relatively warm year round.

Located a short distance from the world renowned Kirra Beach, Kirra Reef is a small, rocky outcrop covered with soft coral, seagrass, ascidians and sponges at a depth of roughly 8 metres. The reef makes for spectacular viewing in an easily accessible location, and there’s guaranteed to be plenty of moray eels, wobbegong sharks, tawny sharks (don’t worry, they’re harmless) and macro ocean life inhabiting the natural wonder.

The reef is reachable by shore, but a boat trip with Diving the Gold Coast provides a relaxed way to see the sights, without battling the beach currents. Call 0415 666 457 or 07 5526 9279 to book and visit www.divingthegoldcoast.com.au for more information.

Accompanying the southern Gold Coast’s pristine sun, sand and surf. Coolangatta will host the Cooly Rocks On 50s and 60s nostalgia festival, which features as the biggest event of its kind in Australia.

Attractions at the festival include a car show, comprising over 1300 hot rods, classic and custom cars, and rock and roll, rockabilly and swing entertainment. More than 50 local, national and international bands will perform and the streets will come alive with 50s and 60s dancers taking advantage of the occasion. UK rockabilly star Si Cranstoun will also join the entertainment line-up this year.

There’s also numerous shows, displays, competitions, parades, rides and competitions, as well as a range of entertainment at the Kirra Surf Precinct, which is located just outside the front door of the Kirra Beach Apartments. Alongside the QLD Mal Festival, promoting longboard surfing, the precinct also includes a Show n Shine with a selection of the finest surf vehicles, including Kombis, panel vans, Woodies and utes, entertainment at the precinct’s Kirra Surf stage and rides operating for the kids. There’s also a Family Precinct located in Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads, which will keep kids occupied with a range of events throughout Cooly Rocks On.

Kirra Beach Apartments provides the perfect hub for the solo traveller, couples, families or groups, with most of Cooly Rocks On’s extensive entertainment and activities just a stone’s throw away.

Many participants in the car show and dance aspects of the festival tend to get heavily into the nostalgia-driven spirit, with vintage costumes the order of the day.

Cooly Rocks On’s major street parade will be held on Saturday, June 6, this year and, as always, it’s expected to make for interesting spectating.

And if all that wasn’t quite enough, there’ll also be an array of vintage-styled food and drink on offer, as well as over 200 retro market and craft stalls.

Tickets to Cooly Rocks On’s many indoor shows are available at www.coolyrockson.com, where you can also find more information about the nostalgia festival.
